Frequently Asked Questions

What is Neuro-physiotherapy?
Neuro-physiotherapy is a hands-on treatment of problems caused by disease or injury to the brain, spinal cord and nerves. People with these problems complain of weakness, paralysis, spasticity, walking problems, movement problems, reduced balance and difficulty performing everyday activities. It is the job of the neuro-physiotherapist to understand what the problems are and to try to reverse them so that normal movement is possible.

What happens if I need a Report written about my treatment?
The physiotherapist will write short reports and letters for you free of charge. This includes a short report to your GP or Consultant, clinic letters, letters to you workplace and referral letters to other medical professionals.

A fee will be charged for completion of more comprehensive reports, such as those required for Case Managers and Solicitors. In this instance the person asking for an in depth report will be invoiced on your behalf, so you do not have to pay up front.

Are the physiotherapy sessions covered by medical insurance?
Some insurers will cover your physiotherapy treatment. Some policies allow a limited number of sessions per year. It is important to check the details of your insurance policy.

Do I need a doctor's referral?
No referral is necessary but we would like you to inform your doctor that you are having neuro-physiotherapy treatment. At your assessment, the physiotherapist will ask you for your doctor/consultant details and will inform them of what treatment plan she is doing for you and the outcome of that treatment.

How many treatment sessions will I need?
There is no magic number here. Each patient is individual. Following your assessment we will be able to tell you roughly how many sessions you will need to achieve the goals we have agreed upon. Once these have been reached, then you must decide whether or not to continue with the therapy.

I am a relative or carer. Can I come and watch the physiotherapy treatment?
Absolutely we want you to be there because you can make sure that the treatment carries on at home. We need your input on how things have gone between treatments and whether or not the client is managing. Everything we do is designed to be inclusive. We want to train carers or relatives how to do the therapy at home. This makes goals achievable.
